2001-yilning 11-sentabrida to'rt yo'lovchi samolyoti olib qochilib, ulardan ikkisi Nyu-York shahrida, biri Pensilvaniya shtati, yana bir esa Virjiniyada, AQSh Mudofaa vazirligi joylashgan Pentagon binosiga qulagan edi. O'sha kunI Amerikada qariyb 3000 kishi halok bo'lgan. O'sha paytda Afg'onistonda asoslangan Al-Qoida terror guruhi bu xurujlar uning ishi ekanini ochiq tan olgan va bu bilan Amerika hamda butun G'arbga qarshi urush ochganini bildirgan. AQSh bunga javoban terrorizmga qarshi urush e'lon qildi. Afg'oniston ishg'ol qilindi. Ikki yil o'tar o'tmay Iroqqa bostirib kirildi.
